Thunder’s Chapman wins Coach of the Year 2011.

Thunder coach Suzy Chapman was amongst nine coaches nominated for the award at the National Netball Goalden Globes held at the glittering ceremony in Leicester. Suzy won the regional round in order to qualify for the national round that rewards the countries top netball volunteers.

It is a fine achievement and follows three successful years at Northern Thunder, however, it was last season that she had a chance to shine when having to take on the Head Coach role. Suzy was assistant to Mike Greenwood who missed the second half of the season with a serious illness and she was thrown in at the deep end. But due to Mike and Suzy’s dedication the season culminated in Thunder’s best ever finish of second in the table and but for three serious injuries to key players, Thunder would probably have made their first Grand Final appearance.

Thunder have an exciting young squad that plays exciting fast netball and hopefully next season will be able to emulate their current successes.

Former England Coach Sue Hawkins took Suzy under her wing, inviting her to England sessions and keeping in regular contact to guide the youngest Head Coach in the Fiat Netball Superleague.

Following acceptance of her award she commented: “I am over the moon and still can’t believe I won the award, I couldn’t have done this without the mentoring from Mike who has taught me so much.”
“I would also like to thank Sue Hawkins who stepped in when I had to take over the Head Coach role and gave me some valuable advice along the way.”

England and Thunder Captain Jade Clarke also commented: “As a coach Suzy brings infectious enthusiasm and a clear understanding individuals needs. This award is certainly well deserved.”
